Punjab Kings: batting blaze, bowling freefall
Fourth on the table with 13 points, but in a tailspin — four straight defeats after winning seven of their first nine. Win tonight and they jump to third. Lose, and CSK and RR (one point behind) are breathing down their necks.
The batting is genuinely elite. Tournament-best average runs per wicket of 38.4 and a tournament-best run-rate of 11. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya have been destructive at the top — Arya striking at 196 in the powerplay — with Shreyas Iyer (averaging 39 at 148) anchoring the middle.
Everything falls apart when they bowl. PBKS pace economy of 10.67 is the worst in the league, their seam bowling average of 42.66 second worst. During the four-match losing run, the death-overs economy ballooned to 14, with eight different bowlers leaking 10-plus per over.
Marco Jansen has been a shadow of himself: economy 10.04, six wickets in ten games, wicketless in five. ESPNcricinfo reports the support staff is still trying to diagnose why he is not getting anything from these surfaces.
Add 18 dropped catches — most in the league, with Shashank Singh personally spilling five — and you have a side keeping itself alive purely on batting heroics.
Mumbai Indians: no playoffs, no captain, plenty of problems
MI were officially eliminated from playoff contention after a two-wicket last-ball loss to RCB on May 10. Six points from eleven games, ninth on the table, three dead rubbers to play out.
The XI itself is a mess. Hardik Pandya misses a third straight game with back spasms. Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav travelled to Mumbai for personal reasons and may not even arrive in Dharamsala in time. Cricbuzz reports Jasprit Bumrah is the leading candidate to captain the side.
Strip those two out and MI still have plenty: a rejuvenated Rohit Sharma (243 runs in six games at SR 177, his highest IPL strike rate ever), Ryan Rickelton up top, Bumrah with the new ball, and Corbin Bosch off a four-fer against RCB. But the bowling depth is alarming — seam economy of 10.59 (second worst) and 32 seam wickets at 44.53 across eleven games.
Mumbai have used 24 players this season, the most of any team — a stat that captures the chaos of injuries, drift, and a campaign that never quite got going.
Breakdown: a pacer's deck and dew at night
The previous match at Dharamsala — PBKS vs DC on May 12 — was extraordinary. All 39 overs were bowled by fast bowlers. Not a single delivery of spin. Significant seam movement throughout, heavy dew in the second innings.
That is brutal news for Punjab on two fronts. Their spinners have bowled just 16.8% of overs this season — roughly half the league average of 32% — meaning their attack is built around a pace unit that is statistically the worst in the tournament.
The first-innings average at Dharamsala since 2023 is 209, and the side batting first has won four of the last five there. But the dew flips the equation at night — chasing teams hit cleaner, defending teams cannot grip the ball in the death.
Head-to-head from April: PBKS chased 196 with 21 balls to spare, losing just three wickets. Prabhsimran and Iyer dismantled the MI attack. The MI bowling without Hardik tonight looks even thinner.
Prediction: where the real value sits
The bookmaker has PBKS at 1.71 — fair given the home advantage, the motivation gap, and MI's missing personnel. But the price is short and the value lies elsewhere.
The PBKS team total line of 198.5 looks beatable. Punjab have averaged 212 runs across their last five outings. Mumbai's bowling has conceded 235, 264, 228 and 207 in recent games — and that was with a slightly stronger XI.
Tonight MI go in with Shardul Thakur (economy 13.38) potentially replacing Hardik, on a flat Dharamsala surface where the first-innings average is 209. With Prabhsimran and Arya teeing off in the powerplay and Iyer anchoring, getting to 199-plus feels like the path of least resistance.
